About

I was planning on a third person, self-reflective 'About' section. However, many people have used the concept of referring to yourself talk about yourself as if you were not in fact yourself ("Hey, look Jesse is talking about his life in the third person."). The idea something like that is avant-garde post-modernism is so 1999. But enough about them. After all, this is all about me.

This is the space that most people either pigeonhole themselves or show how dynamic and interesting they are. As much as I'd like to buck the trend and do neither, those two pretty much cover the range, so it's hard to come up with something new. However, I've worked at McDonald's (I was looking for stock options but I took an early retirement after learning that they IPO'ed several years before I was born) and now I'm doing computer security research and I've done pretty much everything in between.

I spend an awful lot of time in front of computers, which is why I hate them (reverse Stockholm Syndrome, I suppose). In fact, sometimes I wonder if the reason that I do computer security is in the hope that I might get one of those court orders preventing my from touching a computer for five years. Although sometimes I tell people that the reason I program computers is because I like to listen to music, which I suppose is true as well.

When I'm not working (I mostly do "thought experiments" and call it work), I do pretty much whatever happens to strike my fancy at the time. This can include random trips to places that I want to explore, taking pictures, working out (yes, I am a computer nerd who knows his way around the weight room), cooking, speaking Russian, or pretty much anything else. I'll try almost anything because generally one of two things happens: either it goes well and is fun or it goes badly and is not fun. Now the latter case might seem to be somewhat of a downside. However, the things that are not fun almost always are good stories a month later. Note: I have a very large collection of good stories.

I've probably already given out more information than I should to random people on the Internet (yes, I'm talking to you), so I'll stop here. Interestingly, whenever I write one of these things, they always turn out differently. I suppose that makes me sound like a circus showman ("Step right up children, play the game! Just $1, everyone is a winner; everyone gets something different!").
